MSC giant ship knocks down crane in Valencia

A crane in the port of Valencia was demolished when the 23,000TEU container ship MSC Mia collided with it while manoeuvring on the morning of 13 September, a spokesman of the Spanish port confirmed to Container News.

The crane in the MSC Terminal collapsed following the impact, as can be seen in the video recording below, after the ship swiped the equipment as it manoeuved in the terminal.

The crane operator suffered a head injury and several broken ribs, according to local reports, but is out of danger and has been transferred to a hospital, said the spokesman. The worker was able to warn colleagues nearby that the crane had been damaged in order to distance and protect themselves.

The accident occurred at approximately 09:30am (local time).

Although some local reports suggest that part of the MSC ship’s bridge became entangled with a crane cable, the investigation into the cause of the accident has only just begun.

MSC Terminal, as well as the whole port of Valencia, are now operating normally, since 14 September at 08:00am, according to the port’s representative.

Furthermore, MSC is working on the removal of the remains of the crane and cleaning the site of the accident.
