MSC sets new charges from Europe to America

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has published new Peak Season Surcharges (PSS) that will be applied in all shipments from Northwestern Europe and Scanbaltic to several American ports, effective from March.

Firstly, the Geneva-based shipping company will introduce a surcharge in the Canadian port of Vancouver, as well as in Mexico West Coast ports, including Ensenada, Guaymas, Mazatlan, Manzanillo and Lazaro Cardenas.

This PSS which will be implemented in all types of containers from 1 March, will be US$500 per TEU and US$1,000 per FEU, forming the new prices as follows:

  • from current US$2,500 to US$3,500 per TEU
  • from current US$3,000 to US$4,000 per FEU

Twelve days later, on 13 March, the world’s largest ocean carrier will impose a PSS on sailings destined to the US West ports of Long Beach, Oakland and Seattle.

The new prices after the charge of US$2,000 per container that will be applied to all dry, reefer and special equipment cargoes, will be the following:

  • from current US$3,200 to US$5,200 per TEU
  • from current US$3,700 to US$5,700 per FEU

MSC explained in a statement that these surcharges are due to strong demand for containers and consequent difficulties to supply needed equipment from Europe to America.
