MSC says its short sea services in Europe can help meet any present and future domestic and foreign trade demands, especially as Covid-19 crisis remains and challenges the shipping environment.
The Geneva-based company believes that short sea shipping can be a reliable alternative to road transport across land borders during the coronavirus period with strong measures causing disruptions and slowdowns to intra-European trade and traffic, while border closures and strict controls are leading to further delays.
Short sea shipping refers to the movement of cargo by sea over relatively short distances, as opposed to the intercontinental cross-ocean deep-sea shipping, explains MSC.
The second-largest container shipping carrier says it is willing to take some cargo off the road and avoid traffic bottlenecks to cope with the current Covid-19 situation.
The company suggests the combination of its deep-sea services and short sea services, connected to its landside intermodal operations, will allow reliable door-to-door deliveries for dry and reefer cargo.
