The Port of Montreal has received two new electric gantry cranes, which are expected to handle Post-Panamax vessels, on 25 August.
The new equipment, which is part of an order of four cranes, was offloaded at the Port of Montreal’s Cast Terminal. The remaining ones are estimated to be delivered to the Canadian port by the first quarter of the next year.
Τhe new machines will enable the operator Société Terminaux Montréal Gateway (MGT) to benefit from more efficient technology, as they will provide improved operational capacity, level of service and productivity at the Cast Storyteller Terminal and the Port of Montreal, according to a statement.
The new Ireland-built cranes by Liebherr Container Cranes have a payload of 65 tonnes under a double spreader and a capacity of 88 Safe Working Load (SWL) under the hook, with a reach of 55.38 meters, a wingspan of 15.24 meters and a rear reach of 18.29 meters.
Additionally, the new grey-painted gantry cranes are running on electricity, as a part of the approach of the Port of Montreal and its partners to improve the energy efficiency of port facilities.
“Ultimately, the Société Terminaux Montréal Gateway’s (MGT) two container terminals will be equipped with 12 high-performance cranes, corresponding to the largest fleet of electric wheeled gantry cranes in Canada,” stated Michael Fratianni, CEO of MGT.
In the meantime, another 10 electric gantry cranes on tires (ERTG) in place since December 2019 have so far resulted in a 90% reduction of greenhouse gasses (GHG) emissions related to this type of equipment.
