New container terminal opens in Africa’s port of Abidjan

Port of Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire has now a second box terminal which will increase the total container handling capacity of the port from 1 million TEUs to 2.5 million TEUs per year.

Additionally, the African port will be now able to receive vessels of 16 metres of draft capable of carrying up to 14,000 TEUs against 3,500 TEUs currently.

The construction of the new terminal, TC2, lasted 18 months and required an overall investment of 596 billion CFA francs (around US$950 million).

The new box terminal is a joint venture between France’s Bollore and APM Terminals, which is a part of the Danish shipping company A.P. Moller-Maersk.

Since the commissioning of the new facility on 2 November, three major container carriers, MSC, Maersk and CMA CGM, have decided to work with TC2, according to Port of Abidjan’s announcement.
