A new barge feeder service has been launched, connecting the Argentinian ports of La Plata and Santa Fe and creating a new and direct link to Brazil and Asia.
On 9 December, the Newport Management’s 500 TEU barge Bagual departed from the Port of Santa Fe to arrive in the ICTSI’s La Plata terminal four days later.
From there, the cargoes were loaded onto the Log-In vessel Jacarandá on 15 December, with Insuga and Adecoagro being the first companies to use the new service to export bone meal to Vietnam and milk powder to Singapore, respectively.
The service will have a minimum of two calls per month between the two ports of Argentina that will provide connectivity for a market estimated at 80,000 TEU, according to a statement.
“The new product also serves as an alternative river connection to Argentina’s central, northeast and northwest regions, providing a lower inland cost option,” said ICTSI.
Santa Fe Governor Omar Perotti stated, “We need security in the transshipment done by the shipping companies to get to the final destination, avoiding traffic, complexity, and costs in transporting the cargo by truck to the Port of Buenos Aires.”
