The Australian Port of Newcastle has opened an Expression of Interest (EOI) regarding the potential of an Empty Container Park establishment in the Mayfield Precinct of Port of Newcastle.
Through establishing this EOI, which will remain open from 23 September until 5 November 2021, Port of Newcastle is seeking to receive feedback from industry and interested applicants on the project, as well as to discuss how the seaport and an applicant could collaborate to maximise the project.
During the previous July, the port upgraded Mayfield Precinct with the addition of Mobile Harbour Cranes service which is projected to benefit the supply chain, improve material handling and offer safer lifts of two 20’ or one 40’ container in a single move.
The Mayfield 4 berth where the new Mobile Harbour Cranes and potential Empty Container Park will be located, is used for breakbulk and general cargo, while its containerised trade is expected to continue, following the installation of the new equipment.
Within the Mayfield Precinct, the Port of Newcastle is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) for the potential operation or operation and construction of an Empty Container Park, for which the Australian port is willing to dispose of a space of 40,000m².
Furthermore, the Port of Newcastle would provide the applicant with a portion of a hardstand area under licence to establish the Empty Container Park and is prepared to consider establishing the facilities required in agreement with the applicant, as part of the initial license, according to a statement.
However, the Australian port has not yet decided whether or not to proceed with the project, with the ultimate decision to be made pending response to the EOI and a range of other business considerations and factors.
“With the port’s investment in infrastructure, prime location and access to rail and road links and this could be a great opportunity for a collaborative partnership with our growing Port,” said Port of Newcastle Project Director, Lindsay Crutch.
