NWSA total box volumes keep rising despite exports’ fall

The Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA), a marine cargo operating partnership of the ports of Seattle and Tacoma, has reported increases in all sectors apart from exports, during the first nine months of the year, as well as for the month of September.

In particular, during September the ports of Seattle and Tacoma handled a total of 330,517TEU, which translates to an increase of more than 7% compared to the same month last year. Full imports had a slight increase of 0.2%, while full exports registered a decline of 14.6%.

From January until September, total container volumes surpassed 2.8 million TEU, representing a growth of 16% while full imports demonstrated a 22.5% increase, completing 1,101,725TEU. On the other side, exports saw a decline of 11.4% with 522,767TEU handled.

Empty containers transferred through the US port were 611,954, representing the largest increase of almost 50%.

Furthermore, domestic volumes grew by 13% over the first nine months of 2020, while Alaska volumes saw a 5.7% increase and Hawaii volumes grew by 27%.
