NWSA volumes rise in June despite export fall

The Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA), the marine cargo operating partnership of the ports of Seattle and Tacoma, has seen a container volume increase of 19.9% during June, in comparison to the same date of the previous year, by handling 344,280TEU.

At the same time, imports had a growth of 19.9%, while exports saw a decrease of 19.2%, reflecting ups and downs in the United States West Coast.

Furthermore, from January till June, the ports of NWSA handled more than 1.8 million TEU in total, which translates to a year-on-year growth of 18.9%.

More specifically, year-to-date unloadings presented an increase of 31.1% while loadings had a decline of 11.2%.

As for the domestic volumes of the NWSA, they marked a year-to-date growth of 10.8%, in comparison to the same period of 2020, while volumes from and to Alaska and Hawai saw a 6.6% and a 30.6% increase, respectively.

In the meantime, the modernisation project of the US port is in progress. In particular, Terminal’s 5 construction in Seattle is almost done, while the final deck panels and the last electrical vaults have been installed and four new super post-Panamax cranes are ready for installation.

According to an announcement, by the completion of the expansion project at NWSA in early 2022, the 750,000m², on-dock rail terminal will handle the largest vessels in the transpacific trade.
