On 26 January, NYK announced its agreement to share oceanographic data, including wind direction and speed gathered by NYK-operated vessels, with the Japan Coast Guard through Ship Data Center’s IoS Open Platform (IoS-OP) services.
Furthermore, IoS-OP serves as a collaborative platform for data sharing within the Japanese maritime industry, specifically focusing on vessels operated by Japanese shipping companies. The data provided by NYK will support the Japan Coast Guard in enhancing the precision of its sea-current forecasts around Japan, thereby promoting safer navigation for ships.
IoS-OP functions as an open platform where operational data from Japanese shipping companies are stored by ShipDC at its onshore data centre, fostering shared access among various stakeholders in the maritime sector, including shipping companies, shipyards, marine equipment manufacturers, and information and communication manufacturers.
As a core member of the IoS-OP consortium since its inception, NYK has consistently contributed oceanographic information collected by its ship-performance monitoring system, SIMS, installed on around 200 NYK-operated vessels.
While NYK has previously provided the Japan Coast Guard with oceanographic information independently, this collaboration will see the sharing of data through IoS-OP. The Japan Coast Guard will now have access to oceanographic data from approximately 500 vessels operated by NYK, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha.
Additionally, tidal current information predicted by the Japan Coast Guard will be made publicly available through the Marine Condition Display System (MSIL). NYK remains committed to actively participating in the gathering, dissemination, and application of data in the maritime industry through IoS-OP, thereby contributing to the overall safety of ship navigation.
