The Oakland City Council confirmed the reappointments of Andreas Cluver and Arabella Martinez to the Oakland Board of Port Commissioners for another four-year term on 16 July 2024.
During their previous terms, Cluver and Martinez significantly contributed to enhancing the Port’s economic impact at both the Oakland Seaport and the San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport.
They provided crucial oversight and leadership in the Port’s decarbonization efforts and the reduction of emissions from its maritime and aviation operations.
The Board implemented a revised Environmental Ordinance requiring tenants to submit plans for converting their cargo handling equipment to zero emissions. This allows the Port to assess tenants’ zero-emission infrastructure needs and support grant funding opportunities.
The Port has also partnered with the Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems (ARCHES) to designate California as a federal Hydrogen Hub and is advancing projects to accelerate the transition to clean hydrogen at the Port of Oakland.
Additionally, the Port collaborates on the NorCal ZERO project, a US$53 million initiative that deployed 30 Class 8 hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks and opened the nation’s largest hydrogen fueling station for Port of Oakland truckers.
Furthermore, the Board has endorsed the Port’s voluntary commitments as an environmental leader in the transportation sector. The Port is a certified member of the Green Marine Program, which provides a framework to reduce its maritime environmental footprint, and a member of the Airport Carbon Accreditation program, committing to lower emissions from airport operations.
The Port received US$119 million from a state grant to redevelop the Outer Harbor and electrify yard equipment at the Seaport to support zero emissions goals.
Moreover, a US$42 million state grant was awarded to develop a Green Power microgrid at the Seaport, including heavy-duty truck chargers, battery electric storage systems, and locally generated renewable solar power.
In February 2023, the Port held its inaugural environmental symposium at the Oakland Seaport, bringing together national and international leaders in maritime, aviation, commercial real estate, environmental sectors, business, government, and the community to collaborate on innovative zero-emissions solutions.
