A container containing hydrochloric acid collapsed at Kaohsiung Port’s Pier 79 at 3 am (local time) today (17 May), sending bursts of smoke into the air and causing a stench to permeate the area.
Improper stacking is said to have caused the collapse, which caused some of the hydrochloric acid to leak from the container in Taiwan’s port.
The container, which had been labelled as holding hazardous cargoes, belongs to an electronic appliance company whose representative is expected to arrive in the afternoon to relocate the damaged box.
No one was injured and the smoke cleared up after an hour.
Anti-hazardous materials personnel, Kaohsiung Port’s firefighters and Evergreen International Storage & Transport Corp. are on standby in case of another incident arising from the cargo.
