ONE Apus box discharge slow but steady

Ocean Network Express (ONE), the operator of the ONE Apus, which suffered severe cargo losses in a heavy storm in the Pacific on 30 November, has seen 50 containers discharged from the vessel in Kobe as of 22 December.

It is estimated that up to 2,250 containers could have either been lost or have damaged cargo from the violent motions of the vessel in the storm. At the time of writing, general average (GA) had not been declared, but sources within the insurance industry expect the company to declare GA at some point in the near future.

The carrier said in a statement, “We anticipate that it will take some time before the completion of cargo discharge. Meanwhile, inspection and survey work of the discharged containers are underway to assess the cargo condition.”

Insurers WK Webster said, “It is reported that a GA surveyor has attended on board, but at the time of writing General Average has not been declared.” A drone video of the vessel can be seen here.

In addition, the insurer said, “The shipowners have reported that under deck container stows are unlikely to be off-loaded from the vessel and may therefore be delivered to destination by the ONE Apus once the vessel is ready to sail from Kobe. We continue to liaise with the vessel interests in this regard.”
