Ocean Network Express (ONE) and Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) have signed an agreement to jointly promote the development and supply of alternative marine fuels.
ONE and SIPG will jointly explore and develop alternative marine fuels to be supplied to the pan-Japanese operator’s boxships in Shanghai port. ONE said that this not only helps promote the energy transformation and sustainable development of the shipping industry, but also reflects the commitment of both parties in responding to global decarbonisation challenges.
ONE wants to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. In January, ONE ordered a dozen 13,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ships from Jiangnan Shipyard and Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, with delivery starting in 2027. In July, ONE reportedly returned to the two shipyards to order 10 additional vessels.
SIPG is actively developing physical deliveries of cleaner marine fuels, through building the Shanghai Port Green Energy Centre, and working with global partners to research and create a supply chain covering fuel production to refueling.
In January, SIPG signed an agreement with Taiwanese mainline operator Evergreen Marine Corporation to supply methanol bunkers to the latter’s ships. In 2023, EMC commissioned two dozen methanol dual-fuel ships.
Shanghai Port executed the first green methanol ship-to-ship bunkering operation in China in April, and completed its 100th delivery of bonded LNG bunkers in May.
