Updated: OOCL announces new West Coast haulage surcharge from 2021

Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) has announced an emergency surcharge, which will take place on the eastbound leg of the Transpacific trade and will be effective from the new year.

The COSCO-owned carrier will assess an emergency haulage surcharge (EHS) of US$350/container on all general cargo destined to West Coast ports served by the carrier’s in-house truckers, effective from 2 January. This charge is to be paid at the destination, according to the carrier announcement.

The Hong Kong-based company said it has implemented the EHS in view of the prevailing truck power shortage in the West Coast ports and therefore a surge in haulage costs.

OOCL has pointed out that this surcharge supersedes the Emergency Intermodal Surcharge (EIS) was announced on 1 December.
