Optimism for the Liverpool port

The boss of the Port of Liverpool says he is confident the port’s £400m Liverpool2 container terminal will soon start welcoming even more big ships in a move that could help bring more jobs to the Mersey.

The port recently started welcoming two new large transatlantic container ship services moved from congested southern ports.

Last week the port suffered some delays as the big volume of lorries coming to the port for the first time combined with a power cut to create a “perfect storm” that saw some trucks delayed for hours. But the problem was solved within hours and the port’s operations have been running smoothly since, with more containers than ever flowing through the docks.

Now Mark Whitworth, chief executive of Peel Ports, has told the ECHO he believes shipping lines are now starting to see the benefit of bringing containers bound for the North through Liverpool, rather than through southern ports.

And he says talks with shipping lines over bringing services to Liverpool on a permanent basis are well advanced.
