OrbitMI drives sustainable LNG shipping with advanced data solutions

Transporting LNG involves complex decisions crucial for efficiency and environmental compliance. LNG operators can lead in sustainable shipping by using advanced data-driven technologies, enhancing performance in this expanding sector, says OrbitMI.

LNG, a key transition fuel with lower emissions than diesel and HFO, is driving new builds, with 371 LNG carriers on order alongside the existing 693 vessels, according to Ifchor Galbraiths.

“By embracing this complexity and leveraging advanced technologies and analytics, LNG operators can transform environmental challenges into opportunities for innovation and leadership in sustainable shipping practices,” stated Ali Riaz, CEO at OrbitMI.

Handling LNG requires specialized management of cargo temperature and pressure to control boil-off gas (BOG), adhering to strict safety and regulatory protocols. Using LNG as fuel adds a layer of complexity, influencing commercial planning based on prices and voyage duration.

Route planning for LNG carriers involves algorithms for fuel efficiency, time constraints, and weather impacts on BOG. Predictive analytics are crucial for proactive maintenance. Compliance with environmental regulations like CII and EEXI further complicates operations.

OrbitMI, a NYC-based maritime software company, addresses these challenges with vessel performance management solutions integrated with LNG carriers’ data systems. The Orbit Reporter application, a flexible cloud-based tool, captures essential data such as gas operating conditions, LNG inventory, and emissions calculations, minimizing manual input errors.

This customizable application, suitable for LNG carriers and Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRUs), ensures cohesive reporting and data management for FSRUs, crucial floating import terminals in the LNG supply chain.

Orbit Reporter feeds data into the Orbit platform, unifying systems and data feeds for comprehensive optimization and compliance solutions. OrbitMI’s partnership with Bureau Veritas ensures compliance with evolving regulations like EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime.
