Orca AI joins forces with NorthStandard for automated situational awareness solution

NorthStandard and Orca AI have formed an exclusive partnership, with the global marine insurer encouraging its members to embrace Orca AI’s automated situational awareness solution.

Orca AI’s platform enhances vessel navigation in challenging conditions and congested waters, empowering ship owners and operators to identify and address safety gaps and trends effectively.

This collaboration integrates Orca AI’s AI-based solution into NorthStandard’s innovative “Get SET” suite, providing members with practical risk-reduction tools and resources to safeguard their crews and assets.

Additionally, NorthStandard will incentivize the adoption of the Orca AI solution by subsidizing member investments as part of its commitment to delivering exceptional service.

“Having seen how Orca AI supports the bridge team by improving their situational awareness we are confident that it reduces the number of close-quarters situations. By extension, this must reduce the number of collisions, so it was an easy decision to partner with them to support NorthStandard members in enhancing the safety of their operations,” stated Colin Gillespie, NorthStandard’s global head of Loss Prevention.

In addition, NorthStandard anticipates that members will achieve substantial savings through the utilization of Orca AI’s advanced solution. By decreasing bridge workload and facilitating safer decision-making, the platform is expected to lead to fewer human errors.

“The Orca AI platform is already used by leading shipping companies worldwide and we believe it will quickly deliver safety and operational benefits to those of our members who choose to deploy it,” added Gillespie.

Also, through its provision of real-time data and insights, the Orca AI platform empowers crew members with the necessary knowledge and skills to confidently navigate challenging marine environments. This heightened awareness facilitates quicker and more informed decision-making, thereby decreasing the likelihood of accidents or delays and ensuring a safer voyage.

By identifying and notifying crew members about high-risk marine targets, the platform enables ships to avoid unnecessary manoeuvres and speed reductions, resulting in reduced fuel consumption and emissions. Leveraging AI capabilities, the platform optimizes operations, leading to cost reductions and minimized environmental impacts.

A recent analysis conducted by Orca AI revealed significant improvements among customer vessels in 2023. This included a 26% enhancement in the average minimum distance sailed and an overall fleet-wide reduction of 33% in close encounters in open waters, accompanied by a 40% decrease in crossing events.

“We possess the world’s largest maritime visual dataset, comprising four years of data from more than 250 vessels, totalling 20 million nautical miles or 200 years of global sailing. This data is synchronized with inputs from GPS, Radar, AIS, depth, wind, rudder, and gyrocompass sensors to secure optimal accuracy,” commented Yarden Gross, CEO and co-founder of Orca AI.
