Peel Ports Group, the owner of the Port of Liverpool, has completed the commissioning of two additional ship-to-shore (STS) container cranes by Liebherr, which are now fully operational at the Port of Liverpool’s Terminal 1, delivering a 30% uplift in quayside capacity.
The 12-week commissioning programme that was fully completed in January 2022 is Peel Ports’ latest investment to meet the additional demand.
The new equipment is a complement to the six already existing cranes in place, which enable greater efficiency and faster turnaround times for the loading and the discharging of taller container vessels.
Designed and built by the German machine manufacturer Liebherr, the new cranes utilise high tensile steel and lattice boom and beam construction, while featuring improved functionality for higher performance, according to Peel Ports.
The British port operator said the new cranes have greater connectivity, so they can be monitored remotely to deliver optimum performance with the most efficient use of power.
David Huck, chief operating officer at Peel Ports, stated that the new machines, which are now in full operation, represent a significant investment in the group’s capability and highlight its commitment to ensuring the Port of Liverpool continues to provide a highly efficient service.
The announcement follows last year’s completion of Peel Ports’ second phase of investments for Terminal 2, where Peel Ports received ten new cantilever rail-mounted gantry (CRMG) cranes, which led to the opening of an additional 60,703 m2 of yard capacity, as part of the US$542.9 million (£400 million) Liverpool2 project.
