OOCL Rauma loses containers near Dutch coast

The Netherlands Coast Guard has said that the container ship OOCL Rauma had lost containers overboard, following notification on the afternoon, 11 February, from the vessel.

The ship was sailed 43km north of Ameland when it reported the incident, according to the authorities.

The 1,425TEU vessel was en route from the port of Kotka in Finland to Rotterdam. The boxhsip arrived at the port of Rotterdam in the night of 12 to 13 February.

Seven containers were reported lost overboard. The loading of the containers consisted of:

  • paper rolls in three containers
  • Package equipment for paper machines in two containers
  • milk powder in two containers

The Netherlands Coast Guard reports that it immediately sent the aircraft ETV Guardian to the location to investigate the situation on the spot. The Coast Guard aircraft was also alerted and took photos from the air in order to locate the containers and to take photos of the ship.

It is the first loss of boxes in the North Sea since the “MSC Zoe” disaster. The giant container vessel lost more than 340 containers in January 2019 in one of the region’s most serious incidents.
