Port of Felixstowe receives six new electric rubber-tired gantry cranes

Hutchison Ports-operated Port of Felixstowe has received six new semi-automated remote-controlled electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RCeRTGs) from Finnish manufacturer Konecranes.

This is the first part of Hutchison Ports’ order for 17 new cranes at the United Kingdom’s major container port.

The new cranes were unloaded at the port’s Trinity Terminal before being moved to Berths 8 and 9, where they will be positioned. Before entering service, each will go through a brief commissioning process.

The RCeRTGs can lift containers 1-over-6 high and span 7 rows and also a roadway. The cranes are totally automated, with the exception of the lift to or from the carrying vehicle, which is done by remote control by an operator based in a central control room.

The latest crane delivery follows news earlier in June that the Port of Felixstowe has ordered 100 battery-powered autonomous trucks from Shanghai Westwell Technology.
