The Port of Gothenburg has increased its market share of container freight to or from Swedish ports for the fourth year in a row, from 48% to 51% in 2021.
In the previous year, the Swedish port handled 828,000 TEU, representing a rise of 7% in container volumes compared to 2020.
In 2021, Sweden’s busiest port moved a total of 458,000 containers via rail, which is the highest number in its history, and according to Elvir Dzanic, CEO of the Gothenburg Port Authority, this growth was mainly attributed to the port’s growing railway system, Railport Scandinavia, as well as new rail services.
“Despite global disruptions, we have managed to stay open 24/7 without any major disturbances,” pointed out Dzanic, who added that the balance between imports and exports, has also been a great advantage for the port.
The largest amount of containers was handled by APM Terminals. Dennis Lenthe Olesen, CEO of APM Terminals Nordic, commented, “The fact that many turn to APM Terminals in the Port of Gothenburg is gratifying and we at APM Terminals work to increase our capacity and flexibility to meet the ever-increasing demand for logistics solutions.”
The Swedish port claims that it is also growing in relation to the largest ports in Europe, as the five busiest ports represented an average increase of 5% in container throughput, and the Port of Gothenburg saw a rise of two more percentage points.
