Container volumes at the Port of Helsinki were decreased by 8.3% year-on-year in 2021, reaching 467,000 TEU.

On the contrary, the Finnish port handled a total of almost 14.4 million tonnes of goods, representing a growth of 8% compared to 2020.

Hence, the Port of Helsinki recovered not only in total cargo volumes but also in economic development and the Finnish export industry, while total exports marked a 12% rise year-on-year to 6.19 million tonnes. Imports also increased by 6% in 2021, totalling 5.52 million tonnes.

“The Port of Helsinki’s cargo traffic recovered well,” said Ville Haapasaari, CEO of the Port of Helsinki, who added that in terms of unitised cargo, the port broke its all-time record with a total of 12.1 million tonnes.

Meanwhile, in 2021, the port deepened the Vuosaari fairway together with the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency to make it possible for larger vessels to visit Vuosaari.

“2022 is also looking bright for cargo traffic,” commented Haapasaari regarding the possible outlook of the current year.
