Port of Hueneme and STAX Engineering unveil emissions reduction system

The Port of Hueneme, a key hub for international trade and a pioneer in environmental stewardship, unveiled an innovative partnership with STAX Engineering, a leader in maritime emissions capture and control.

This collaboration marks a significant advancement in emissions reduction within the maritime industry through the introduction of a state-of-the-art emissions capture and control system. This system features mobile floating barges equipped with filters that can be deployed on ocean-going vessel stacks to remove harmful emissions such as particulate matter and nitrogen oxides.

Furthermore, this initiative addresses the need to mitigate the effects of damage sustained by the Hueneme port’s Shoreside Power system during a major storm last December, which resulted in significant flooding at Port Hueneme.

The cutting-edge system developed by STAX Engineering offers a major advancement in reducing air pollution from ships at berth. The system functions as follows:

  • Capturing Emissions: STAX’s system is cleverly designed to surround a vessel’s smokestack, capturing particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions directly at the source.
  • Efficiency and Cost-Effectiveness: Unlike traditional shore power solutions, the STAX system requires no costly vessel modifications. It effectively captures pollutants without disrupting vessel operations, providing a cost-effective solution for shipowners and port authorities.
  • Renewable Energy: The barge operates on renewable diesel, which is cleaner than the electric grid, and its exhaust meets the health-protective standards mandated by CARB. This aligns seamlessly with the Port of Hueneme’s commitment to sustainability.

This collaboration reinforces the Port of Hueneme’s dedication to environmental leadership. As a Green Marine-certified port, the Californian port has long prioritized environmental responsibility, and this new partnership with STAX Engineering highlights its ongoing commitment to cleaner air, healthier communities, and a more sustainable future.
