Port of Klaipėda, Proman enter into methanol partnership

The Port of Klaipėda aims to be transformed into an energy hub in the future. That is the reason it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Swiss producer and supplier of methanol Proman.

This collaboration is expected to assist the Lithuanian port in the planning, design, and implementation of future methanol bunkering, as well as the prospective development of a methanol-to-power project for shoreside energy (“SSE”) at or near the Klaipėda port.

According to the port’s statement, the partnership contract commits to exchanging information on methanol production, storage, supply, bunkering, and use, as well as potential joint participation in methanol production and power projects, alternative fuels events, conferences, seminars and initiatives.

“The number of ships powered by alternative fuels has been growing every year. Last year, 275 alternative fuel ships were ordered worldwide,” stated Algis Latakas, CEO of Klaipėda State Seaport Authority.

Proman will also help the Port of Klaipėda initiate discussions and collaboration with methanol specialists and operators, methanol clusters and associations, and shipping lines.

“Our range of products, particularly our low-carbon methanol blends, combined with our continuing investments in green and blue methanol production facilities globally, will help catalyse the low-carbon energy transition for a diverse range of industries,” commented Timothy Cornelius, managing director of Corporate Development at Proman.
