Port of Liverpool announces new container milestones

Peel Ports Group’s Port of Liverpool has announced a number of record-breaking achievements across its container terminals division.

Firstly, the UK port handled more containers than ever, totalling 89,400 TEU in March and surpassing the previous record of 81,750 TEU, set in October 2019.

In addition, the Liverpool2 (L2) container terminal successfully deployed five cranes simultaneously for the first time since the terminal opened in 2016, as it handled the MSC Hong Kong in a record of 4,516 container moves.

As part of Peel Port’s US$523 million (£400 million) investment into L2, the five new cantilever rail-mounted gantry (CRMG) cranes that were added at the terminal at the start of the year, brought a total of 22 CRMGs.

“These record-breaking achievements are real evidence of the increasing capabilities and optimised efficiencies of our containerised cargo operations at The Port of Liverpool,” commented David Huck, chief operating officer at Peel Ports Group.

Furthermore, the port’s Terminal 1 facility also saw a 30% boost to its quayside capacity earlier this year, by adding two ship-to-shore cranes to the six already in place, enabling the servicing of taller container vessels.

“The significant investments we have made over the last few years have enabled us to grow and develop our capabilities in order to enhance our service levels across both our terminal operations,” said Huck.
