The Port of Los Angeles handled 855,652 TEUs in January, marking the second-best start to the year on record.
The Californian port said that this achievement, trailing only behind the cargo surge triggered by the pandemic in 2022, reflects the port’s ongoing momentum with six consecutive months of year-over-year growth.
Notably, January volumes exceeded the corresponding figures of the same month in the last year by 18%.
In the last month, loaded imports at the port totalled 441,763 TEUs, marking a 19% increase compared to the previous year. Also, loaded exports stood at 126,554 TEUs, reflecting a 23% rise from the previous year. Additionally, the LA port handled 287,336 empty containers, registering a 14% increase over 2023.
“Two factors are driving our strong start. First, cargo owners have been replenishing inventories and moving goods at a fast clip ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, which will slow production in Asia. Second, consumer spending and mostly strong economic data continue to accelerate the American economy,” stated Gene Seroka, executive director of Port of Los Angeles.
