The Port of Melbourne handled a total of 269,126 TEU in February, marking an increase of 1.3% year-on-year in container volumes.
Additionally, total imports at Oceania’s busiest port rose by 2.4% over the same month of 2021, while exports represented a marginal increase of 0.1% year-on-year.
At the same time, full container transshipments declined 18.5% compared to February 2021, while total empty container movements rose 14% year-on-year, totalling 74,714 TEU.
In the meantime, year-to-date container volumes of the Australian port have reached 545,066 TEU, which translates to a slight decrease of 0.6% from the same period last year.
“Container trade for early March 2022 is tracking below the comparative month in 2021,” said the port in a statement.
Furthermore, according to the Port of Melbourne, Australian ports continue to see shipping lines revising schedules and changing rotations in an attempt to recover time.
“Locally, the impacts of congestion and landside dwell time for imported containers continue to place pressure on the supply chain,” said a port official.
