Port of New York and New Jersey between the two California giants

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has announced its container volumes for the month of December 2022, as well as for the full year of 2022.

A record total of nearly 9.5 million TEUs throughout the year was noted for the first time in the port’s history. In particular, the major US port handled a total of 9,493,664 TEUs during the last year, representing an increase of 27% from pre-pandemic 2019 annual levels.

Despite the fact that in December 2022, container cargo activity at the seaport fell 15.2% compared to November of the same year reaching 613,011 TEUs, the port achieved its all-time annual box record.

“This [December volumes] is the result of reduced production abroad due to slower demand,” said the port authority of New York and New Jersey in a statement.

The Port of New York-New Jersey was the second busiest container port in the United States in 2022, following the Port of Los Angeles and overcoming the other San Pedro Bay giant in Long Beach.
