In October 2023, the Port of New York and New Jersey experienced its busiest month of the year, handling 742,571 TEUs.
Despite ranking as the US second busiest seaport, there was a 6.3% decline from the same month last year, when the port moved 792,548 TEUs.
Retailers pushed to receive the remainder of products destined for store shelves in time for the holiday shopping season, according to the port.
Import numbers for October showed a marginal dip of 0.2%, with a total of 381,756 TEUs. Year-to-date import figures for 2023 reached 3,339,345 TEUs, reflecting a 19.6% decrease from the corresponding period in 2022.
Additionally, exports fell 1.2% in October, reaching 111,024 TEUs. The Port of New York and New Jersey transported 1,068,955 TEUs from January to October, compared to 1,086,093 TEUs during the same months in 2022.
In October, 56,819 containers were transported by rail through the East Coast port, down 11.4% year-over-year. Rail volume declined 12.9% from January to October 2023 year-over-year, while vehicles passing through the port totalled 29,792 in October, a 6.9% decline from October 2022. From January to October 2023, auto volume was 11.1% lower than in the same period in 2022.
Throughout the first ten months of the year (January through October), the total container volume at the Port of New York and New Jersey was 6,531,687 TEUs.
