For the third consecutive month, the Port of New York and New Jersey has surpassed a total volume of 700,000 TEUs, marking a significant milestone.
In May, the US port also achieved the number one position in the United States for total TEUs and total loaded TEUs.
The total volume for May reached 790,758 TEUs (439,593 containers), reflecting a 16.9% increase from the 676,311 TEUs (376,449 containers) recorded in the same month in 2023.
This double-digit growth represents the sixth consecutive month of year-over-year volume increases, bringing the year-to-date total to 3,501,676 TEUs. Additionally, this performance positions the Port of New York and New Jersey as the second-busiest cargo port in the United States for the year so far.
Imports saw significant gains in May, with a 17.8% rise compared to the previous year. A total of 413,833 TEUs moved through the port, up from 351,430 TEUs in May 2023. From January through May, imported loads totalled 1,791,956 TEUs, marking a 14.1% increase from the same period in 2023.
Moreover, exports increased by 12.7% in May compared to the previous year, totalling 124,801 TEUs, up from 110,695 TEUs in the same month in 2023. From January through May, the port exported 570,901 TEUs, representing a 3.8% increase from the volumes recorded in the same period last year.
Furthermore, export empties saw a 17.4% increase in May, totalling 250,070 TEUs, compared to May 2023. From January through May, export empties reached 1,127,973 TEUs, a 14.2% increase from the 987,475 TEUs handled during the same period in 2023. Import empties also saw a significant rise of 40.5% from January through May compared to the previous year.
May’s rail volume at the port of New York and New Jersey have also increased by 3.8% year-to-year, reaching 54,641 containers. For the period January-May, rail volume was 6.2% higher than in the same period in 2023.
In May, the US port handled 33,984 autos, an increase of 6.3% compared to May 2023, while auto volume in the first five months of the year rose by 11% compared to the same period in 2023.
