Port of NY and NJ sets all-time July record surpassing 800,000 TEUs

July marked a record-breaking month at the Port of New York and New Jersey, with a total volume of 806,015 TEUs, making it the busiest July in the port’s history and the seventh busiest month overall.

The port’s July figures represent an 11.1% increase from last year’s numbers, bringing the total container volumes for 2024 to 5,016,626 TEUs.

Imports rose by 13.5% in July with the US port handling 422,212 TEUs. From January to July, imports reached 2,580,267 TEUs, translating to a 13.7% increase over the same period in 2023.

Furthermore, exports grew by 12% in July to 112,175 TEUs. Between January and July 2024, export volumes reached 795,697 TEUs, a 5.9% rise from the first seven months in the previous year.

In addition, rail volumes at the port of New York and New Jersey experienced gains as well, rising by 2.6% in July to 56,525 containers compared to the previous year. Year-to-date rail volume through July was up 4.5% compared to the same period in 2023.

Auto shipments, however, decreased slightly in July, with 38,367 autos moving through the port, representing a 2.5% decline from July 2023. Despite this, auto volume for the year through July remained strong, marking an increase of 8.5% year-on-year.
