Port of NY/NJ handles 7.8 million TEUs in 2023

In 2023, the Port of New York and New Jersey closed the year on a high note, surpassing pre-Covid volumes from 2019 by 4.4%.

Throughout 2023, the port maintained its position as the nation’s second busiest for loaded imports and exports, handling a total of 5.3 million TEUs.

December contributed to this success, with total volume reaching 633,925 TEUs (351,402 containers), a 3.4% increase compared to December 2022. This brought the port’s total for 2023 to 7,810,005 TEUs (4,328,153 containers).

Imports also saw a rise in December, up by 7.5% compared to the previous year, totalling 326,412 TEUs (180,534 containers). However, overall imports for 2023 amounted to 3,990,270 TEUs (2,212,980 containers), a 16.9% decrease compared to 2022’s figures.

In addition, December exports showed a modest increase of 1.4% compared to December 2022, with a total of 104,278 TEUs (56,013 containers). Nonetheless, exported loads for 2023 totalled 1,284,976 TEUs (693,781 containers), reflecting a slight decrease of 1.1% from 2022.

Export empties decreased by 1.7% in December, while import empties rose by 10.1% compared to the previous year. December also saw a 9.8% increase in rail volume, totalling 50,442 containers. However, rail volume for the entire year was 11% lower than in 2022.

Furthermore, auto volume experienced a decline in December, with 30,633 autos moving through the port, a decrease of 19.2% compared to December 2022. Overall auto volume for 2023 was 12.9% lower than in 2022.
