The third busiest container port in the United States, New York and New Jersey port has handled monthly record cargo box volumes in September.
Amid a global increase in shipping delays that have significantly affected several US ports, operations at the Port of NYNJ remain fluid with two container vessels currently waiting to dock and an average wait time of less than 1.5 days year to date, according to the port authority’s data.
The Port of NYNJ totalled 724,418TEU in its terminals during the last month, achieving the eighth-highest monthly container throughput as well as the busiest September ever recorded since the port began tracking cargo activity.
This number also reflects an increase of almost 16% over the same month of the pre-pandemic year 2019, but a decline of 7.2% from August 2021, when the third-busiest boxport of the country handled 780,782TEU.
The Port Authority attributed this decline to seasonal trends, as traditionally, the holiday goods movement through the seaport begins in May and peaks in August.
