Port of Oakland launches ship turning basins study

The Port of Oakland, in partnership with the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) San Francisco District, has launched the planning process to widen its ship turning basins to accommodate larger container ships calling North America.

The comment period started on 20 December 2021 for the USACE draft Integrated Feasibility Report and Environmental Assessment (IFR/EA), and interested parties can submit comments until 31 January 2022.

“With the release of the District’s feasibility report we are taking a step forward to widening the turning basins and continuing that progress and growth,” said San Francisco District commander, Lt. Col. Kevin Arnett.

In addition, Port of Oakland maritime director, Bryan Brandes, stated, “Modernising our turning basins to routinely accommodate larger container vessels is critical to meet the needs of our customers and stakeholders.”

The widening of the Oakland Harbor turning basins is expected to be a major infrastructure improvement that will enable the US port to benefit the local community, the region, and the national economy.
