Port of Oakland reports 1.5% decline in June container volumes

The Port of Oakland’s total volume of loaded containers was down 1.5% in June compared to the same month last year.

The US port handled 163,757 loaded TEU last month compared to 166,252 TEU in June 2021. Total volume, including empties, was down 29%.

On the other hand, the volume of loaded imports continues to increase. Loaded imports rose slightly to 95,530 TEU last month compared to 95,060 TEU a year ago. This is an increase of 0.5%. It should be noted that the trend sets a record volume of imports.

However, the increase in imports was offset by a decrease in loaded exports. Loaded export containers reached 68,227 TEU in June compared to 71,192 TEU last year. This figure represents a 4.2% decrease, reflecting ongoing challenges with vessel schedule disruptions and a lack of sufficient capacity on departing vessels at Oakland for full exports.

“Despite prolonged supply chain challenges, so far we are maintaining our import volume,” said Port of Oakland maritime director Bryan Brandes.

“We’re continuing to encourage ocean carriers to restore routes that will help expand vessel capacity for our exporters,” he continued.
