Port of Oakland has seen its total cargo volume declining by 20% in October, compared to the same month of the previous year, caused by the decreased vessel traffic.
At the same time, containerised imports at the Californian port dropped by 14% compared to last year’s October, while exports also saw a reduction of 27% year-on-year.
Moreover, according to the port’s statistics, 43% fewer ships called Oakland last month than they did in October 2020, “due to delays elsewhere.”
In particular, the Port of Oakland said that some carriers diverted ships directly to Asia, bypassing Oakland due to the delays at Southern California ports.
However, the port highlighted that it is not experiencing the supply congestion that has hampered other seaports of the United States.
Meanwhile, shipping lines have begun restoring Oakland vessel services suspended earlier in the year, while 61 ships called in the port last month, compared to 54 in September.
The Port of Oakland said it is expecting an even larger number of vessel arrivals for November, and it noted that additional service calls would be particularly welcomed by exporters.
Regarding the first ten months of the year, the total cargo volumes in the US port are higher by nearly 2%, while imports have seen a growth of 8% over the January-October period of 2020.
