Port of Oulu has placed an order for a Konecranes Gottwald ESP.7 Portal Harbor Crane to enhance cargo handling capabilities at their Main Quay.
Scheduled for delivery in the second quarter of 2025, this Generation 6 machine will enable operators to reach across special RoRo vessels with containers stacked high on deck, in addition to managing general cargo.
“This new portal harbour crane will expand our container handling capacity, adding essential flexibility to handle also another kind of cargo. Slewing gives it the extra range of motion to access every container on the RoRo vessels, including those in hard-to-reach corners. In addition, its electric drive will reduce our energy consumption, which aligns to our state environmental permit,” mentioned Marko Mykkänen, managing director of Port of Oulu.
Situated in northwestern Finland, the Port of Oulu operates three commercial harbour facilities, including Oritkari, which primarily handles containers. With diverse vessel types prevalent in modern maritime traffic, the new Generation 6 portal harbour crane is tailored for RoRo vessels with high-deck container configurations. It will also bolster flexibility in handling general cargo and heavy project cargo weighing up to 125 tonnes.
Moreover, this order specifies a Konecranes Gottwald ESP.7 Portal Harbor Crane featuring a 51-meter working radius and a maximum lifting capacity of 125 tonnes, suitable for container ships up to post-Panamax class. Its robust lifting capacity profiles, enhanced operational efficiency, and high durability ensure extended service life. Powered from shore via a cable reel, the crane minimizes local emissions and harnesses lowering and braking energy for auxiliary use on the crane or for return to the grid.
Additionally, customized to fit the existing portal structure, the crane boasts an 18-meter track gauge, and a 7-meter clearance height, and is strategically positioned closer to the water edge to optimize its operational reach. To support this asymmetrical configuration, each water-side corner is equipped with 8 wheels, while each land-side corner has 6 wheels.
“The outstanding performance from the two Konecranes cranes onsite already in the Port of Oulu convinced the customer that a Generation 6 portal harbour crane was the right solution for their current needs. We’ll be able to install the crane on existing rails, minimizing downtime as the port transitions to a new era of productivity,” stated Hans-Jürgen Schneider, regional sales manager of Port Solutions at Konecranes.
