Port of Riga welcomes largest container ship in its history

On Sunday night, the container ship MSC Maritina V made its entrance into the port of Riga, marking the largest container vessel to ever visit the Latvian port.

Measuring 266 meters in length and 37 meters in width, the ship operates under the flag of Madeira (Portugal) and boasts a maximum capacity of 4,533 TEUs (20-foot containers). MSC, the Swiss-based international company, which operates the vessel, has incorporated the Port of Riga into its regular container line route.

Docking at the berths of SIA “Rīgas Centrālais Termināls,” MSC Maritina V was later transferred to the berth of SIA “Baltic Container Terminal” for ongoing loading operations. On 8 February, the container ship was scheduled to depart from the Port of Riga bound for the Port of Le Havre in France.

The Port of Riga currently hosts six regular container lines: CMA CGM, Maersk, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), Sea Consortium Pte. Ltd Trading, Unifeeder, and Samskip Multimodal B.V.

In a noteworthy milestone, the container segment of the Port of Riga achieved a record-breaking throughput last year, surpassing 5 million tons of containerized cargo, translating to 465,400 TEU for the first time in history. This represents a 9.8% increase compared to the previous year, with container cargo accounting for 27% of the port’s total cargo volume.
