The Port of Salalah celebrates its 25th anniversary this month and in terms of volume growth, Oman’s major port has seen significant growth in both the container and general cargo sectors.
While the box terminal is still expanding, there is a considerable rise in general cargo volumes, with a strong 26% increase in the first half of this year, compared with the same period last year.
“This outstanding performance puts the port on track not only to make a major improvement but also to set a new benchmark,” said APM Terminals, the operating company of the port.
Keld Mosgaard Christensen, CEO of the Port of Salalah, said that the anniversary affords a unique opportunity for reflection. He cited training and growth as critical factors in the port’s and, by extension, the team’s success.
Christensen mentioned, “We strongly believe that employee development is not only crucial for their individual career progression but also for the overall success of our organization.” He added that the port has witnessed a consistent rise in customer satisfaction (Net Promoter Score) over the last four years.
Furthermore, the Port of Salalah has started its Tamkeen Talent Development Programme, which aims to further cultivate lean business practices and nurture talent inside the organisation, particularly in leadership areas such as customer service.
Christensen highlighted the significance of growing their personnel and improving their leadership abilities, acknowledging that it eventually makes the organisation more effective in providing services to its valued clients.
The Port of Salalah continues to play an important role in determining Oman’s economic future. Because of its strategic location along the important East-West Shipping Lane, it occupies a crucial role as a facility that is partially owned and operated by APM Terminals (30%).
