Port of Savannah moves record container volumes in FY 2021

The Port of Savannah has marked a record in container volume during the fiscal year (FY) 2021, handling 5.3 million TEU, which translates to an increase of 20% in comparison to the previous fiscal year.

Incoming Georgia Ports Authority’s (GPA) Board Chairman, Joel Wooten pointed out the impact of the port’s expansion project on this success. “Growing our business by 20% in a single year is an amazing accomplishment and secures Savannah’s position as the fastest-growing gateway in the nation over the past 10 years,” he noted.

During the fiscal year 2021, GPA added 210,000 TEU of capacity at the Port of Savannah through expanded container handling space and equipment at Ocean Terminal, as part of the port’s expansion project. Additionally, with a high-tide depth of around 16.5 metres, the deeper harbor will allow vessels in the 16,000+ TEU range to take on heavier loads with fewer tidal restrictions.

The project is now completed by nearly 90% and is expected to be finished in December 2021, according to a statement.

“As port users continue to route additional cargo to Georgia, we are bullish on the future,” stated GPA Executive Director, Griff Lynch.
