The Port of Savannah handled a total of 428,000 TEUs in January, showing a moderate increase of 1.5% (equivalent to 6,300 containers) compared to the same month last year.
In January, rail cargo throughput at the Port of Savannah surged to 47,132 containers, marking a significant 27% increase of 10,000 boxes compared to the previous period.
Meanwhile, this uptick follows the completion of GPA’s Mason Mega Rail project, a US$220 million investment which added 24 miles of the on-terminal track last year.
“Customers 250 miles inland and greater are tapping Savannah as their port of choice for ag exports, manufacturing components and retail goods. The investments we’ve made in rail capacity have not only increased the number of containers the Port of Savannah can handle each year but extended our reach to new markets that can be served effectively by Garden City Terminal,” stated Griff Lynch, CEO and president of Georgia Ports Authority.
Additionally, the Port of Brunswick’s Colonel’s Island Terminal saw robust activity, managing 65,400 units of Roll-on/Roll-off cargo during the same period.
GPA’s focus on Roll-on/Roll-off operations has also been fruitful, with 51 vessel calls recorded last month. The authority anticipates a record year, projecting to handle around 800,000 vehicles in Fiscal Year 2024.
Notably, the monthly average for Ro/Ro cargo stands at 69,000 units so far this fiscal year, showcasing a notable increase compared to the previous fiscal year’s monthly average of 60,400 units for the same period.
“Areas such as Atlanta, Dallas and Memphis rely on the Port of Savannah to handle import and export goods with speed and efficiency. Our improved capacity means businesses across these important markets can grow their trade through Georgia,” noted Griff Lynch.
