Port of Southampton receives new hybrid equipment, as part of DP World’s massive investment

DP World UK has confirmed that 11 Kalmar’s straddle carriers have arrived at the Port of Southampton and will be put into operation immediately.

According to the global port and terminal operator, the new hybrid carriers use 20% less fuel than their diesel-electric counterparts.

DP World said that the new equipment is part of its announced £40 million (US$55 million) investment in the Port of Southampton, aiming to upgrade its infrastructure, port equipment and operations.

“I am delighted to announce the arrival of a new class of 11 hybrid straddle carriers at Southampton, which illustrates once again DP World’s commitment to improving the nation’s trading infrastructure and playing our part in helping the UK Government meet its target of delivering the net-zero 2050 policy,” commented Ernst Schulze, Chief Executive of DP World UK.

The order of the straddle carriers was made at the end of April 2021 and the new machines will increase the total Kalmar fleet of the port to 82 units.

DP World noted that the order and the installation of the new hybrid straddle carriers is part of its support of the UK government’s climate ambitions.
