Port of Tallinn in Estonia has announced an investment of up to US$56 million for the construction of a new 310-meter quay at Paldiski South Harbor.
A part of the investment (around US$21 million) will be provided by the European Union through the EstMilMob military mobility project, which aims to improve transport links with Tapa over the next five years.
The quay and hinterland area will be completed in the summer of 2025.
The new quay is not only necessary for military purposes but also for increasing the maritime transport capacity of goods and vehicles.
After this investment, the port of Tallinn is expected to become an important partner in the construction and subsequent maintenance of offshore wind farms in the Baltic Sea region.
In fact, the new quay will ensure the ability of the port to accept high-draft special-purpose vessels for the construction of offshore wind farms and the transport of wind turbine components. In addition, ro-ro vessels can be served alongside the new quay.
The Estonian port is currently in talks with several major European wind farm builders to establish and maintain a port offshore wind farm in the neighboring Paldiski South Harbor area.
The wind farms to be built in the area plan to start production in 2028, preceded by a three-year construction period of the wind farms.
The positive impact of the investment on the operating volumes and turnover of the port is expected from 2025 after the completion of the quay, but as negotiations with developers are still ongoing, it is currently not possible to assess the financial impact on the Estonian port in more detail.
