Port of Tanjung Pelepas, Malaysian first terminal to hit 12M TEUs in single year

Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), a joint venture between Malaysia’s MMC Group and Netherlands-based APM Terminals, has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first container terminal in Malaysia to handle over 12 million TEUs in a single year.

In particular, PTP handled 12,253,309 TEUs in 2024. PTP Chairman, Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh, expressed immense pride in this accomplishment, and stated, “2024 has been nothing short of extraordinary. It is gratifying to witness how PTP has risen to the occasion, embracing challenges with courage and transforming them into opportunities for growth and innovation.”

This accomplishment surpasses PTP’s previous record of 11.2 million TEUs set in 2021, reaffirming its status as Malaysia’s leading and largest transshipment hub. The historic 12 millionth TEU was handled at around 7:00 PM on 23 December 2024, marking a significant chapter in PTP’s history.

Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh added: “Our record-breaking performance underscores PTP’s indispensable role in global supply chains. This milestone is a testament to the dedication, resilience and hard work of the entire PTP team. By seamlessly handling such substantial container volumes, we have consistently delivered exceptional services to our valued customers and partners, contributing to Malaysia’s economic growth and reaffirming PTP’s position as one of the world’s most efficient and high-volume container terminals.”

The year 2024 has been a landmark period for PTP, characterized by record-breaking achievements. On 22 September 2024, PTP completed an impressive 14,036 quayside moves in a single 12-hour shift.

Additionally, in July 2024, PTP reached its highest monthly throughput, handling 1,115,181 TEUs. Consistently maintaining high performance, PTP managed over one million TEUs monthly for seven consecutive months starting in May 2024.

In December 2024, PTP successfully deployed Kaleris’ Navis N4 4.0 container terminal operating system, a significant upgrade to support future growth while ensuring operational efficiency.
