Port of Virginia invests over US$140 million in automated cranes

Konecranes will supply the Port of Virginia with 36 Automated Stacking Cranes (ASCs) as part of a significant capacity expansion investment and as part of the port’s continued efforts to increase operational efficiency, capacity, and competitiveness in the global shipping industry.

The order is worth more than US$143 million and will be completed in the second quarter of 2023.

The new equipment will be supplied in two batches of 18 units for the Norfolk International Terminals North Terminal project, with the first batch scheduled to arrive in mid-2025 and the second batch in mid-2027.

The US port has been a Konecranes customer for many years, receiving the first order of 30 ASCs in 2007 and buying an additional 86 in 2016.

According to Konecranes, these efforts aim to lower carbon footprints by providing creative and eco-friendly solutions while also matching port equipment with their yard automation ambitions.
