The Port of Zeebrugge has reported a total of 2,205,457 TEU in 2021, which is an increase of more than 22% over the previous year.
During the same period, the Belgian port moved more than 49 million tons of cargo, marking a year-on-year 4.6% growth, as well as a record after 11 years.
Dirk De fauw, mayor of Bruges and chairman of the board of Port of Zeebrugge, believes that the port played a pioneering role in the activities in the region during 2021. “The figures and achievements during the past year illustrate the ability of the port people and companies to give their best even in times of uncertainty,” he said.
In 2022, the announced merger of Zeebrugge with the port of Antwerp is expected to be completed. In the coming months, all formal steps will be taken to finalise the merger, with the official launch date of the new Port of Antwerp-Bruges anticipated at the end of April.
