Porto Itapoá handles nearly 600,000 TEUs during first half of 2024

Porto Itapoá experienced its best semester and month in history during the first half of 2024. The Brazilian port registered a total throughput of 597,338 TEUs in the first six months of the year, marking a 12% increase from the same period of 2023.

Felipe Fioravanti Kaufmann, director of Business Development and Customer Experience at Porto Itapoá attributes this growth to the expanding Asian market. “The entire port logistics system of the southern cluster saw an increase in throughput figures, driven primarily by imports from China,” he pointed out.

In June, Porto Itapoá handled 109,889 TEUs, setting a new monthly record and surpassing the previous high of 107,475 TEUs in April 2024.

The rise in animal protein exports significantly contributed to this growth, with volumes increasing by 43% compared to the first half of 2023.

Kaufmann attributes the above-average increase in volumes at Porto Itapoá to the diverse range of maritime services provided by the terminal. “We are reliable and offer high productivity to shipowners, a key factor in directing shipping lines to Porto Itapoá,” he stated.

Additionally, June saw record levels in general cargo imports, reaching 40,817 TEUs, and in reefer cargo imports, hitting 1,360 TEUs. The month also marked a milestone in cross-docking operations, involving the direct transfer of cargo between trucks and containers.
