PSA partners with HERE Technologies to enhance truck operations in Singapore

HERE Technologies, a major provider of location data and technology solutions, has announced its collaboration with PSA Singapore, the operator of the world’s largest transshipment hub, to revolutionise the container truck ecosystem in Singapore.

The aim is to enhance the efficiency of goods movement at Singapore’s terminals.

Singapore holds the prestigious position of being the top maritime capital globally, with the Port of Singapore ranking as the world’s second busiest port in terms of container volumes. PSA boasts connectivity to over 600 ports worldwide and handled 38.8 million TEUs last year.

In pursuit of optimising truck operations and eliminating inefficiencies within Singapore’s container trucking community, PSA has introduced OptETruck, a cloud-based transport management solution that leverages automated scheduling and asset pooling to enhance truck resource utilisation.

Powered by HERE Tour Planning and Location Services, OptETruck optimises route planning and truck assignments in real time based on driver locations. This approach minimises empty runs – truck trips without cargo – and ensures drivers receive job assignments close to their current locations. Consequently, this leads to improved transit and waiting times, enhanced driver well-being, operational efficiency, and reduced carbon emissions.

The adoption of OptETruck by companies has resulted in a remarkable 50% reduction in empty runs, equating to an annual decrease of approximately 10 million kg of carbon emissions. This reduction is equivalent to planting 300,000 trees per year.

“Working closely with the Digital Transformation arm of PSA, we designed a solution that utilizes location technology to address the specific challenges of the container truck ecosystem around the Port of Singapore. We’re pleased with the results from early adopters of the OptETruck, which has given PSA confidence to onboard more than 50% of container trucks entering and exiting Singapore’s ports by the end of this year,” stated Kushal Rajveer, head of Supply Chain for Asia-Pacific at HERE Technologies.

As per the findings of the HERE Technologies APAC On The Move 2023 study, logistics firms across the Asia-Pacific region express a strong preference for turn-key solutions that offer ease of implementation without the need for costly, time-consuming, and labour-intensive system overhauls.

The collaboration between HERE and PSA aligns perfectly with this demand, as it furnishes PSA with a seamless, readily deployable solution customized to their specific needs.

“Together with PSA, we are crafting solutions that go beyond mere logistics optimization – we’re enabling PSA to set new standards in port management on a global scale. This collaboration not only enhances operational efficiency but also positions PSA at the forefront of innovation, ultimately supporting Singapore’s ambition to be a smart nation. HERE is proud to enable PSA in shaping the future of port operations and smart logistics,” commented Deon Newman, senior vice president and general manager for Asia-Pacific at HERE Technologies.
