The intermodal transportation and logistics company, RoadOne IntermodaLogistics, is building a 31,587m² distribution and fulfilment centre in Norfolk, less than 10 miles away from the Port of Virginia for the transloading of containers and expedited e-commerce deliveries to Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, and Northeast markets.
With 80 dock doors for loading and unloading trucks and over 800 trailer parking spots, the facility is expected to be delivered by August 2022, being the fourth new transload facility that RoadOne has added to its portfolio within the last 14-month period.
“The facility will be well situated to address today’s growing need for e-commerce fulfilment that positions products closer to consumers,” stated Kendall Kellaway, senior vice president of commercial at RoadOne IntermodaLogistics.
The logistics hub is also anticipated to serve the increased flow of containerised imports to the US East Coast, by supporting the transloading of ocean containers to free up container equipment, as well as to help customers fend off container fees, such as detention and demurrage.
“RoadOne’s strategic decision to build a distribution and fulfilment centre in Norfolk holds real value for the company and The Port of Virginia,” said CEO and executive director of the Virginia Port Authority, Stephen A. Edwards, who went on to add that RoadOne will be able to help its customers capitalise on the efficiency, growth and global reach of the US port.
RoadOne will also be working in collaboration with the Port of Virginia to implement sustainable green transportation with electric drayage trucks, which will travel between the port and the new facility, as well as electric yard jockeys for repositioning containers, according to a statement.
